The Guild is Located in the historic, Hudson’s Bay building in downtown Calgary. The restaurant features the finest traditions of butchery, cookery and bar-keeping. The Guild encompasses much of the ground floor of the iconic downtown Hudson’s Bay store. Plus a big chunk of the former basement food court. It also spills onto Stephen Avenue consuming the entire south colonnade to create one of Canada’s largest covered patios, seating about 175 outside.
The Guild unites modern and classic design. The contemporary room pays homage to the historic HBC building, and artwork depicting Alberta’s landscape invokes a sense of place within Calgary’s core. Featuring glass meat lockers, a prize bull and natural marble slabs with veining that mirrors a steer head, The Guild is truly for meat eaters.
On the Inside, The Guild is a split-level dining room and lounge seating about 160. As a result, it is a gorgeous space with a long, curving bar fronting an open kitchen on the lower level. The kitchen is set around a huge Argentinean-style, wood- and charcoal-burning grill. Tall seats line the bar and low tables cover the terrazzo tile floor. The floor is one of the few original elements remaining from The Bay. Moreover, lining the staircase walls are pictures of black-and-white photos showcasing the Bonacini family hunting expeditions. Lastly, at the bottom of the stairs, there’s a 160-seat “speakeasy” lounge, Sub Rosa that handles private functions with flexible seating and at a communal table seating over 100.
From the metal birds hanging gracefully from the ceiling to stately leather furniture and the lively open-concept kitchen, The Guild is a true feast for the senses. A rich colour palette evokes a warm and inviting atmosphere, and unexpected touches create a visually captivating space that complements The Guild’s equally enticing fare.
